Happiness is a Loaded Blender: The Super-Smoothie Miracle

Raw Replacement Therapy… My first tentative dip into the raw pool was through the process of substitution. .A raw green smoothie displaced my usual breakfast – typically something that I would grab off the Bed and Breakfast table after my guests were done eating. I was literally like a dog waiting for scraps. A piece of frittata?! A heel of cinnamon toast!? Give it to me! Now! Hell, I was a one-woman’ ravaging horde – the poster child for the Importance of Eating a Good Breakfast! Having left my house so early in the morning to prepare food for other people, I would have rarely had time to make something for…

What the Hell Is a Vegan? Life Before Raw Food Existed

Once upon a time, I had never heard of a raw food diet.   It’s strange that I honestly never even thought about vegetables or fruit being involved. I guess that I had been forced to hazard a guess as to what it was, my ideas would have hovered around sushi and steak tartar. Or maybe food you hadn’t cooked and shouldn’t even think of eating.  But honestly? I was clueless. My friend, Alisa, changed all of that for me. She alone is responsible. I operated a Bed and Breakfast in Santa Fe, NM for 16 years and I had only once run into guests that were living with what…

    The High Road To Raw

There’s no sugar coating it. I pretty much went about the Raw thing all wrong. For a few short weeks I dabbled with a Raw Till Four kind of scenario. Then I went whole hog. It was like a shock to my system. I was hungry. For people who are genuinely ill with diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. drastic measures are usually required to cleanse the body quickly and efficiently, essentially flushing the system of all toxins that are contributors to the negative state of health. My friend, Alisa, literally cured herself of severe, debilitating rheumatoid arthritis in three months by adopting a 100% raw food diet virtually overnight. Nothing else worked but that did.…

The Cheesy Truth: 6 Reasons Why You Should Stay as Far Away from Dairy as Possible

Got milk? We have all seen the star-studded banners, TV ads and billboards that glorify dairy products. But, has someone with a milk mustache been taking us for a ride all this time? Dairy is a touchy subject these days. Of course, there are a lot of supposed experts who claim that dairy is important for everything – from strong bones, healthy teeth to athleticism and everything in between. Lately, however, there’s disagreement brewing. Maybe dairy isn’t so great after all? I remember when this information started leaking out; my mom and dad couldn’t believe it. They had spent their entire lives being duped into believing that milk was, somehow,…

I Get Raw With A Little Help From My Friends

Friends can be the ‘secret sauce’ when it comes to succeeding at something. They’re the ones who encourage you, praise you and sometimes even give you a kick in the ass when you can’t reach around to do it yourself. They can be the glue that keeps you together. Most of my close female friends are far away. Sometimes I really miss them. Now it’s not that I don’t think of them often. I do. But it’s in a sort of ethereal way…like lovely background music that you somehow take for granted but would be looking around for if it suddenly was gone. They are not there in their entirety…

Raising Vegans: Is A Vegan Diet Healthy for Children?

A significant percentage of children in today’s world are in a pathetic shape. And no, I’m not talking about starving kids in Africa; I’m referring to the kids here in ‘our own backyards’. Recent stats show that one in five school-going kids in the United States is obese [1]. Let that just sink in. It’s even worse for the adults. With nearly 70% of adult Americans obese or struggling with some form of weight issues [2], it’s easy to see that we’re looking at an epidemic. So, we need to be honest about the elephant in the room (pun intended) and give it a pre-emptive shot in the ass. Otherwise our…

RAW RECIPE: Jicama and Hemp Seed Tabouli

I had a craving for tabouli but all the recipes I kept coming across use cauliflower as the main ingredient. It’s like once they figured out that cauliflower made a great raw rice they started using it for everything! Cauliflower is great and all but I believe in mixing things up a little bit. Besides I’ve got some die-hard anti-cauliflower vigilantes around here who are just not having it! If I’m ‘uncooking’ for the masses I need to get crafty. So I used jicama instead. It rices up real good and everyone loves it! It’s especially great in this dish; the flavor is clean and just slightly sweet. Mixing in…

    What’s So Important About Enzymes?

Raw Food enthusiasts always go back to the enzyme in support of their dietary choice. But there’s a reason for that: no diet better supports digestive enzyme activity than one that’s high in raw vegan foods. And enzymes are necessary. We need enzymes the same way that Frankenstein’s monster needed that electrical charge to give him life. Enzymes are micro-proteins that are largely composed of amino acids. Enzymes play an indispensable role in our biology; they essentially provide the trigger for all chemical reactions that go on in our bodies from digestion , metabolism, detoxification, brain function, repair of tissues and organs  to every process in between. Enzymes control the speed…

RAW RECIPE: Papaya Noodles With Green Beans and Mustard Sauce

Papaya meat is my favorite color in the whole world so it’s no surprise that I love them! Currants soaked in apple cider vinegar give bite to this elegant, deep orange dish. The addition of dehydrated green beans makes the meal so lush and freshly colored, it’s almost too pretty to eat. This would be great to serve when you have guests although I’ve noticed that there are a number of people out there who don’t particularly warm to the bright papaya. It’s crazy. I think they’re incredible. I have to admit that there’s many a morning that I indulge in the simplicity of half a papaya with a dribble…
